Plant Care Guide

Water deeply and less frequently:

This encourages roots to grow deeper, making plants more drought-tolerant. Watering deeply means to water slowly and for longer duration. This allows soil around the plant to absorb larger quantities of water.

Water early in the morning:

This allows the water to soak in before the heat of the day causes evaporation.

Check soil moisture:

Use your finger or a stick to check if the soil is dry before watering.

Consider plant needs:

Different plants have different watering requirements, so adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

How Much Should I be Watering?

Please keep in mind that each plant is different. The location, variety, and maturity of a plant all play an important role in the species’ water needs.

Plant roots should begin to root in the soil within the first couple of weeks so watering is key!

Sod

It is very hard to over water new sod! Freshly installed sod should be slightly soggy soft. It is important to check on the sod during the morning and hot times of the day to ensure the sod is not drying out.

Evergreen Trees

Water deeply until the soil is saturated 1 time a week for the first month. Always check soil moisture before watering to ensure the tree is not getting overwatered. Watering occasionally during the winter months will help to decrease possible winter burn.

Evergreen Shrubs

Wet the soil surrounding the plant 2-3 times a week during the first few weeks. As temperatures decrease, evergreen shrubs require more water! It is key to ensure damp soils during the fall and even occasional watering during the winter months to help decrease winter burn.

Deciduous Trees

Water thoroughly and deeply into the root system of new trees. This should be done daily for the first two weeks. Soil around the root ball should be moist 6” from the surface. Gradually decrease watering over the following weeks and months as the tree takes root.

Deciduous Shrubs

For the first few weeks deciduous shrubs need to be watered daily. If soil is dry 6” from the surface be sure to water deeply. Water every 2-3 days from 3-12 weeks after installation. After 12 weeks water weekly until the shrub is established which can take 1-2 entire growing seasons.

  • [During hot and dry spells additional watering may be required.
  • [Avoid over watering with all new plants. If the soil is moist no water is needed!
  • [Over watering can cause wilting and even yellowing leaves.

These are simple, generic guidelines to follow and we recommend doing additional research around your specific plant species.
